Staying cool in the Summer Season

Summer is the “Pitta/Fire” time of the year.

It has been extremely hot in many places for weeks on end, above 90 -100 degrees in some places with 90% humidity in others.

Pitta is comprised of the elements Fire and Water.

If you are feeling over-heated, hot, puffy and bloated from holding water, or suffering from sinus infections, headaches, or cold/canker sores, you are in a “Pitta” imbalance.

Cravings for sweets, ice cream, and sodas can go up and so does some  peoples weight during the summer due to increased cravings for cold sweet foods.

Cravings for sweet, bitter, astringent tastes are actually correct because they will cool the fire and help dry out the extra water retention.

Below are some ideas that can help keep you cool, without messing up your weight and digestion.

Cooling foods, teas, spices, essential oils

To avoid over-consuming too many calories and carbohydrates to bring down the heat and water in your system you may want to try instead:

  • Organic Cranberry or Pomegranite Juice with sparkling water and lime. Add 2 tsp of Health Equations Electrolyte Solution to stay hydrated - (products)

  • Odwalla or Santa Cruz ’s Limeade:  Add 2 tsp of Electrolytes

  • Cool Spearmint, Peppermint, Raspberry, or Hibiscus Tea with a drop of cooling maple syrup

  • Cumin Coriander Fennel Tea, (CCF tea:  see recipe below)

  • Chammomile tea

  • PMS or DandelionTea by Traditional Medicinals (not only for PMS). This tea is made to help remove heat, water due to the dandelion, red clover, uva ursi, and carob.

  • Grandma’s Tummy Mint has Lemongrass, Peppermint and Blackberry.  Add a few drops of cooling maple syrup and almond milk for a cooling drink in the evening to help curb the ice cream cravings.

  • Chocolate Soy Milk: One of my clients recently came up with this one instead of ice cream

  • Decaf Chai Tea with Vanilla Almond milk

Try to eat more:

  • Sweet, cooling fruits such as watermelon, nectarines, cherries, and berries

  • Light cooling vegetables such as asparagus, cucumbers, salads, and Baby bok choy

  • Lighter, cooling proteins such as lentils and basmati rice, light white fishes,  shrimp or scallops, or organic chicken or turkey if you eat fish or meat

  • Lighter cooling spices include cumin, fennel, and coriander, rose, mint

  • Sandalwood, Rose, and Lavender essential oils in coconut oil used topically will help cool down hot, irritated skin

1 heaping teaspoon fennel seeds (crushed but not powdered)

Put seeds into Tea pot and bring to boil.  Steep for about 10 minutes.  Cool and add drop of maple syrup if you need a little more sweet.
