We're moving into the Kapha Season: Kapha can increase congestion, colds, flus, & sinus problems. According to Ayurveda, we are now moving out of the Vata season and into the Kapha season. The change of seasons can cause lots of chaos with energy levels, congestion problems, lethargy, digestion issues, irregular sleep patterns, colds and flu's and sinus infections. Below are some ideas to help you stay balanced during the season change. Remember, each person's constitution and cold or illness will be unique, so getting specific advice is always recommended. It is also time to begin thinking about doing a Spring Cleanse in April or May. Please don't
hesitate to call (303) 447-9484 if you have any questions. For cold, flu, sinus symptoms, consider trying: 1. Janet Zand's Insure Plus, Metagenics Echinacea Synergy, Banyan Immune Support, or Lung Support which contain blends of Echinacea, Turmeric, Goldenseal, Licorice, etc. 2. Fresh Ginger or Cinnamon Tea with honey and lemon juice. Try Breathe Deep Tea, or Cold Care Tea by Traditional Medicinals. You can also add Health Equations Electrolyte Formula's for hydration (link to store) 3. Colloidal Silver Nasal Spray with Aloe Vera &/or Metagenics Sinuplex 4. Try putting a little Castor oil and/or Vitamin E oil on the outside of your nose and up inside to soothe irritated membranes.
5. Planetary Formulas or Turtle Island Wild Cherry Bark Syrup 6. Gargle with 1/2 tsp Turmeric, 1/2 tsp lemon juice, and 1/2 sea salt in 4 oz warm water. Continue to gargle throughout the day. Get lots of rest, try a dry sauna if congested or wet steam if too dry. You can also take a warm bath or shower with Eucalyptus essential oil or Banyan Myrrh or Tulsi essential oil. Try some gentle chest opening yoga postures, drink Miso (see recipe) or vegetable soup with ˝-1 tsp turmeric, sea salt, cumin, fennel, etc. Get the Kapha congestion & lethargy moving! The light is now increasing in the evening, but gone in the early morning for a while. Doing a few rounds of Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutations can help get you going in the morning. Sun Salutations are a wonderful way to pay respect to the sun, which warms and lights our planet and hearts. It is also a great way to stretch all the muscles, ground your energy, and stimulate your system at the same time! From Gigio Kolouch Makes 6 servings Miso is a paste made from fermented soybeans, grains, and salt. It cleanses toxins from the body and provides digestive enzymes. Take care not to boil the miso, as boiling will destroy the enzymes. It will stay fresh for months in the refrigerator and can be used to replace salt or salty cheese in a recipe. Miso comes in a variety of flavors. The lighter colors are suitable for Spring and Summer while the darker reds are best in Fall and Winter. Miso. 1 (5-inch) piece kombu sea
vegetable Bring the kombu and mushrooms to a boil in the water, then lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the broth. (This is known as dashi and may be used as the stock base for any light Japanese soup.) Bring the dashi to a boil, the turn off the heat. In a cup, dissolve the miso in 3 tablespoons of the hot stock and add it to the stock in the pot. Ladle the miso soup into 6 soup bowls and garnish each serving with the chopped green onion and slivered lemon rind. Per Serving: 37 calories; 1 gram fat; 2 grams protein; 7 grams carbohydrate Variations: Garnish the soup with thinly sliced mushrooms, chopped greens, seaweed, or grated carrot instead of the green onion and lemon rind.
